Spike well installation
from €350
- When water is shallower than 7–8 m
- Usually done in one day
- Pump and house connection extra
Spike well installation in Riga and the Riga region is only part of what we do: we install spike wells (“spice” in Latvian) for private houses, summer houses and gardens, drill boreholes, clean and dig concrete-ring wells, and install pumps and water treatment equipment.

We publish our main prices openly. For a borehole the price depends mostly on depth and casing. Work out an indicative drilling cost.

The best guide is what works for your neighbours. Choose what is common around you and we show where to start.
If your neighbours' spike wells give water, the groundwater is shallow and the sand lets it through well. A spike well is the cheapest and quickest option.
About spike wells →Dug wells show that shallow water is there. If your neighbours' wells do not run dry in summer, a spike well or a dug well will do; well water needs a test.
Dug well or spike well →Where people around you drill boreholes, there is often little water in the shallow layer, or it is of poor quality. The geology sets the depth.
About boreholes →The LVĢMC borehole map shows the depth of nearby boreholes and aquifers. Send us your address and we tell you where to start.
How to use the borehole map →
We assess the site Water depth, soil and distance to the house.
We drive the spike A pipe with a filter down to the water layer.
We flush it Until the water runs clear.
We connect the pump And check how much water it gives.
A new spike well costs from €350, a borehole from €65/m. In your request, write the address and what is already on the plot, and after you submit the form, we contact you within 5 minutes.
All three sources draw groundwater, but from different layers. How deep the water is on your plot decides which source works, which pump you need and what the job will cost.
| Source | Depth | How it gets water | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dug well (concrete-ring well) | Usually up to 10 m, the groundwater layer | A shaft is dug and concrete rings are set in it; water is pumped by a surface pump or a submersible pump | Cleaning from €150, digging depends on the job |
| Spike well | The water level must be no deeper than 7–8 m | A narrow pipe with a filter at the end is driven or drilled into water-bearing sand; water is drawn by a surface pump or a pump station | from €350 |
| Borehole | Usually from 20 m and deeper, down to an aquifer covered from above by dense layers | Drilled with a drilling rig, fitted with casing pipes and a filter; water is lifted by a submersible pump | from €65/m |
A spike well and a dug well take groundwater that lies close to the surface. This is cheaper, but this water is more easily affected by what happens around it: rain, fertiliser, waste water from a septic tank. A borehole's aquifer is covered from above by denser layers, so it is better protected, and the amount of water is usually more stable even in a dry summer. Yet it too can contain a lot of iron, manganese or hardness salts, and only a water test shows that.
A surface pump draws water by vacuum, and in practice it lifts it from no deeper than 7–8 m. That is why a spike well suits a plot where groundwater is close and the soil is sandy. If the water is deeper, or the ground has stones and dense clay, the solution is a borehole with a submersible pump. Comparisons with pros and cons: spike well or borehole, borehole or dug well and dug well or spike well.
Before the job, we find out how deep the water is in the neighbours' wells, spike wells and boreholes, and we take the available geological data into account. Still, the amount and quality of water at a specific spot can only be known after drilling and testing, so we do not promise them in advance.
All prices are starting prices for a typical job in Riga and the Riga region. The final sum depends on depth, soil, materials and access for machinery, and we state it before the job.
A well or borehole up to 20 m deep, from which no more than 10 m³ of water is taken per day, needs no licence from the State Environmental Service (VVD). For a deeper borehole, the licence is requested before the job by the drilling company, not the homeowner, and the state fee is €35.57. In the building code, a spike well (driven well) is a water abstraction borehole, so the same rules apply to it.
After a borehole is made, the company prepares the borehole passport, and the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) approves it within 10 working days; the fee is €115.34. Under Cabinet Regulation No. 253, an explanatory memorandum (paskaidrojuma raksts) is submitted to the municipal building authority (būvvalde) for a new well or borehole, but the VVD infographics describe this step differently, so check it with your building authority before the job. More: borehole registration.
State rules do not set a distance in metres from a well to a septic tank. No protection zone is set for a well or borehole used for your own needs, if the surroundings are kept in order and waste water does not get into the ground. So in practice we place the source as far from the septic tank and manure as possible. More: protection zone around a well.

If there is mains water (public water supply) in the street by your property, compare both options. You pay for the connection once and then pay each month for the water you use. Your own source needs an investment, a pump, often a filter and maintenance too, but there is no water bill. Both are also possible: drinking water from the mains, and a spike well for watering the garden. How connecting works: connecting to mains water.
We serve Riga and the Riga region. In Riga, spike wells and wells are most common in neighbourhoods of private houses, for example Mežaparks, Bieriņi, Trīsciems and Vecāķi.
Outside Riga we work in Mārupe, Ķekava, Ādaži, Salaspils, Baldone, Jūrmala and elsewhere. All places: where we work.
After you submit the form, we contact you within 5 minutes. In the conversation we clarify the job and the place and agree on a site visit or a day to start work.
No. Before the job we assess the depth of the neighbours' sources and the available geological data, but the amount and quality of water can only be known precisely after drilling and testing. If the water turns out to be too deep for a spike well, we will tell you what the next solution is.
That depends on the groundwater at your spot. A spike well reaches down to the water-bearing sand layer, but the water level must be no deeper than 7–8 m, because a surface pump cannot lift water from a deeper level. If the water is deeper, we will recommend a borehole.
If it is no deeper than 20 m and abstraction does not exceed 10 m³ per day, no VVD licence is needed. A well and a borehole are first-group engineering structures, so ask your building authority about the explanatory memorandum. More: borehole registration.
We recommend it. A full test (chemistry and microbiology) costs from €95 and shows whether the water contains iron, manganese, nitrates or bacteria, and whether you need a filter. We take the sample and deliver it to an accredited laboratory.
Give your name, phone and address. A specialist contacts you within 5 minutes to confirm the job and the price.
