The networks in Ķegums, Rembate and Tome are run by Ķeguma Stars. This page sets out what can be checked about the water supply in Ķegums, and how we choose and install a source here.
How many connections the Ķegums network has
On its website, Ķeguma Stars gives the number of water main connections: 144 in Ķegums, 77 in Rembate and 17 in Tome. There are 200 sewer connections in Ķegums and 42 in Rembate. A connection is not the same as a house: one connection can serve a block of flats. The company does not publish a list of streets without a network, so we find out what is in your street when you send a request.
We found no published data on the quality of the Ķegums network water, and the tariff page shows 2022 documents that may be out of date. To connect, the owner submits an application to Ķeguma Stars with a copy of the land register extract, and the company issues technical conditions.
The Daugava, the hydro plant and the forests: what this means for a source
The layout of Ķegums is shaped by the hydroelectric power plant, the Daugava with its reservoir, the railway and the A6. Around it there are also wooded areas and technical infrastructure zones. For choosing a source, this means three things.
- Near the reservoir, groundwater can be close to the surface, and then a spike well makes sense. But shallow water near the shore is more sensitive to surface water, so for drinking we have it tested in a laboratory.
- On a forest plot, we choose a spot for the rig between trees and roots, and the access road must take heavy machinery. For a dug well, large trees nearby also mean leaves in the well and roots in the joints.
- Technical and energy zones have their own access rules. If the plot borders such a zone or a power line runs over it, check before drilling whether protection zones apply to the spot.
We do not guess the groundwater depth in Ķegums in advance. The best guide is the neighbours' wells and spike wells, and data from the nearest boreholes: borehole map.
Spike well, borehole or dug well: what to choose
A spike well works if the ground is sand and the water level during pumping is no deeper than 7–8 m. Then spike well installation in Ķegums costs from €350, and with a pump station it supplies the house or garden. If the water is deeper, if spike wells in the area have a low yield, or if you live in the house all year with high consumption, we recommend a borehole. It costs from €65/m, a borehole about 30 m deep from €2,000, plus fitting out from €500 and pump installation from €200.
Old houses by the Daugava often already have a dug well (concrete-ring well). If its water turns cloudy after rain, the cause may be the joints or the top: cloudy well water. Well cleaning with disinfection costs from €150, and afterwards we recommend a water test (basic from €35).
Documents: the borehole passport and Ogre municipality rules
After drilling, the company that drilled the borehole prepares the borehole passport: it records the depth, pipes, filter, aquifer, test pumping result and laboratory tests. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) approves the passport within 10 working days, the state charge is €115.34, and one copy stays in the State Geological Fund. The law allows groundwater to be used once the borehole passport has been approved. More: borehole passport.
Ogre municipality binding regulations No. 24/2025 apply in Ķegums. A local source, such as an artesian borehole, must be physically separated from the network by an air gap (point 43), and the contract application must give technical information about the local water abstraction (point 57.5). The former Ķegums municipality co-financing rules were repealed in 2022, and we found no new support scheme in Ogre municipality.
