That means the pipe in the ground, the entry into the house, the pump and pressure tank, the filters and the distribution to the rooms. In Riga and the Riga region we plan and build this system as one whole, so that the pump, filters and pipes suit each other. In your request, give the water source you have or plan, and what has already been built in the house.

What a private house water supply consists of

  1. Water source A spike well, dug well or borehole. The source decides which pump is needed and how much water the system can give. If there is no source yet: spike well, borehole or well digging.
  2. Water pipe in the ground A PE pipe from the source to the house below frost depth, on a sand bed and, where needed, insulated.
  3. House entry The point where the pipe passes through the foundations or floor into the utility room, with a protective sleeve and a seal.
  4. Pump and pressure tank A submersible pump in the source or a pump station in the house, a pressure tank, pressure switch, pressure gauge and shut-off valves.
  5. Water treatment A mechanical filter and, depending on the test, iron removal, softening or UV disinfection.
  6. Distribution Pipes to the kitchen, bathrooms, boiler and outdoor tap, with a shut-off valve for each branch.

Water pipe from the well to the house

The pipe from the source to the house is the part of the system you never see again, so mistakes in it cost the most. We use a PE pipe made for drinking water, which we try to lay in the ground in one piece, with no joints. We choose the diameter by the distance and the pump's output, because pressure is lost in a long and too narrow pipe. For a submersible pump, we also lay the cable in a protective conduit in the same trench.

The pipe must be below frost depth. That is not a figure from the regulations, but practice: around Riga the pipe is usually laid at a depth of about 1.2–1.8 m, depending on the soil and whether there will be a cleared driveway above it. Where the pipe leaves the well, caisson or borehole head and where it enters the house, we insulate it as well. We dig the trench as part of the water pipe installation, as wide as the pipe and the sand bed need.

Water entry into the house

The entry is the most common place for a water pipe to freeze or leak. In a new house, a protective sleeve is left through the foundations before the concrete is poured. In an existing house, we drill an opening and seal it so that groundwater does not run in along the pipe. At the foundations the pipe often comes up closer to the surface, and that is where it freezes first. So we insulate this section, and in an unheated basement or under an unheated floor we also add a heating cable.

Utility room: pump, pressure tank and filters

The pump, pressure tank and filters need a room that stays above zero all year, has electricity and where backwash water can be drained, because iron removal and softening filters backwash regularly. The usual order is: shut-off valve, mechanical filter, pressure tank with switch, treatment units, then the boiler and distribution.

We choose the type of filter only based on a water test, because buying equipment without one makes no sense. On pumps and pressure tanks: water pump installation. On filters: water treatment. Sampling: water testing.

Water pipe installation in a private house: distribution to the rooms

For internal distribution we use PEX or multilayer pipes with a manifold or with branches from a main line. A manifold lets each outlet be shut off separately, and the pressure in the kitchen and shower changes less when both are running at once. For the outdoor tap we fit a separate shut-off valve and drain, so that it can be prepared for winter without shutting off the whole house.

Water supply for a country house

A country house often has an old dug well, from which water is taken with a bucket or a simple pump without a pressure tank. Bringing water into a country house means three jobs. The first is checking whether the well has enough water and what its quality is. The second is fitting a pump and laying a pipe to the house below frost depth, and the third is installing at least a pressure tank and a filter in the house. If the well runs dry or the water is unsuitable, a new spike well or borehole may be better value. Choosing a pump for a well: well pump.

Documents for a new source

A water abstraction well or borehole, including a spike well, is a first-group engineering structure. For a new structure, an explanatory memorandum (paskaidrojuma raksts) is submitted to the municipal building authority (būvvalde). If the borehole is deeper than 20 m or you plan to take more than 10 m³ of water per day, the drilling company gets a VVD licence before the job. Practice differs between municipalities, so we recommend checking with your building authority before the job. If there is a water main in the street: connecting to mains water.

Cabinet Regulation No. 500 (General Construction Regulations), Annex 1 (water abstraction wells and boreholes are first-group engineering structures); Cabinet Regulation No. 253 (engineering structures), point 6.², sub-point 1 (explanatory memorandum); LBN 222-15, point 64 (a driven well is a water abstraction borehole); the law “On Subterranean Depths”, Section 11(1), point 2 (no licence up to 20 m and 10 m³ per day). How the work goes

  1. Request Describe the source, the house and what has already been built. After you submit the form, we contact you within 5 minutes.
  2. Inspection and plan We look at the source, the route of the pipe, the entry and the utility room, agree on the pump, filters and distribution and state the price.
  3. Building We lay the water pipe, make the entry, install the pump, pressure tank and filters and build the distribution.
  4. Commissioning We flush the system, set the pressure, check the joints and show you where the shut-off valves are and how to drain the system.

We build systems all over Riga and the Riga region, for example in Ādaži, Ogre and Sigulda.

What building a water supply system costs

We state the price of the whole system once we know the source, the distance to the house and what has to be installed in the house. Individual parts have prices in the price list:

Work Price Note
Spike well installation from €350 without the pump, pressure tank and connection to the house
Borehole equipment from €500 without the pump
Submersible pump installation from €200 pump separately
Iron removal filter with installation from €600 chosen based on a water test
  • the distance from the source to the house and the soil along the pipe route: sand, clay, stones, tree roots, paving;
  • the entry point: a ready sleeve in the foundations, or an opening has to be drilled in existing foundations;
  • the choice of pump, pressure tank and filters, set by the source and the water test;
  • the scope of internal distribution: how many water points, floors and bathrooms;
  • whether something has already been built and is fit for use.

Frequently asked questions

Can you build the system if another company made the spike well or borehole?

Yes. We ask for the borehole passport or other data on the source, measure the water level and then choose the pump and the rest.

What pipe diameter is needed from the well to the house?

For a private house, a 32 mm PE pipe is usually enough. If the distance or the consumption is large, we lay 40 mm. We choose exactly by the pump's output and the distance.

Can the water pipe be laid shallower if it is insulated?

Yes, if there is an obstacle, such as stones or other utilities, but then it needs thermal insulation and often a heating cable too. A pipe below frost depth is the safer and, in the long term, cheaper solution.

Can the system be built in winter?

Pump installation and work in the house can be done in any season. Digging in frozen ground is harder and more expensive, so we usually plan the water pipe in the ground for when the ground is not frozen.
