Elsewhere you have to rely on your own source. Vangaži is a small town of industrial origin with apartment blocks, detached houses and forests around it. This page covers what we know about the Vangaži water supply, the support conditions and our work.
Who runs the Vangaži water main
Vangaži town and the villages of Gauja and Inčukalns used to be supplied with water by Vangažu Avots. With decision No. 2570 of 26.07.2023, Ropaži Municipal Council began splitting it up: the Vangaži town assets pass to Garkalnes inženiertīkli, and the Gauja and Inčukalns village assets to Saltavots of Sigulda municipality. We could not confirm whether the reorganisation has been completed, and we could not find a website for Garkalnes inženiertīkli.
We found no public data on the water quality of the Vangaži network, nor a list of streets without a network. If your house gets network water and the taste or sediment bothers you, start with a sample from your own tap: water testing, basic package from €35.
Ropaži municipality co-financing: 50% up to €2,000
Ropaži municipality binding regulations No. 34/23 (in force from 01.01.2024) apply to the whole municipality, including Vangaži town. For a residential building's water main connection they cover 50% of the total cost, no more than €2,000 and €60 per metre; for sewerage 50%, up to €3,000. Up to €300 is provided for design and as-built documentation. For priority groups, such as low-income households, large families, pensioners living alone and people with disabilities, the support is 100%, up to €8,000 and €120/m.
Conditions: the main runs past or near the property, the applicant has been declared as resident at the property for at least 6 months, there are no real estate tax debts, and the work is finished within 6 months of the contract. The money is allocated within the annual budget in the order applications are received.
If the main is at the boundary, a connection with this support can cost less than a new borehole with equipment and a filter. If it is not, the co-financing does not help, and the realistic route is your own source. How to compare: connecting to mains water.
If you stay with your own well or borehole
Ropaži municipality binding regulations No. 21/22 set several rules for your own source. A local well or borehole may be used alongside the network only as a separate system, and the two may not be used at the same time (Section 17). If the property is connected to the public sewer but takes water from its own source, a meter must be installed on that source at the user's expense; otherwise the bill is calculated using the municipality's consumption norm (Section 41). Before signing a contract, the service provider may inspect the property if it has its own water source (Section 59).
If a meter will be needed, take it into account when planning the utility room around the pump and the pressure tank, so that there is space for it. A new build that connects to the main without a branch also needs a building permit from the Ropaži municipal building authority (būvvalde), and the technical conditions are valid for two years.
Spike well, borehole and filters in Vangaži
Descriptions of the place mention forests, the nearby Gauja basin and areas of industrial heritage. We do not assume the groundwater depth or composition in advance. In a town of industrial origin, though, it is worth knowing what used to be on or near the plot: if there was a factory or a warehouse next door, order the full test before you start drinking water from a new source. Also ask the laboratory about additional parameters.
- Spike well installation in Vangaži (“spice” in Latvian): from €350, if the ground is sand and the water is shallow.
- Borehole: from €65/m, a borehole about 30 m deep from €2,000; for a borehole deeper than 20 m, the drilling company applies for the licence (state fee €35.57).
- Water treatment: an iron removal filter or water softener with installation from €600, reverse osmosis from €250, filter maintenance from €40/h.
- Well cleaning with disinfection: from €150.
