Ķekava municipality also has published data on network water and municipal co-financing (subsidy) for connection, so here both routes can be compared in figures. This page covers a comparison of the two routes, water hardness by village and how we install a new source.
Which villages have the Ķekavas nami water main
The Ķekavas nami water tariff (€1.09/m³ excluding VAT from 01.01.2026) applies to the Ķekava parish villages of Katlakalns, Krustkalni, Ķekava, Odukalns, Rāmava, Valdlauči, Ziedonis and Vimbukrogs and to the Daugmale parish village of Daugmale. In part of the municipality, water is supplied by Rīgas ūdens, but the binding regulations do not say in which part. The company does not publish a list of villages or streets where houses use their own sources.
Ķekava is a transition zone between town and countryside, with intensive suburban development by the river Ķekava and the Daugava. In new streets, a house may be built before the network arrives, and then the owner chooses between a temporary solution, such as a spike well, and a long-term source.
Network water in Ķekava: hardness and iron in the 2026 tests
| Sample (2026) | Iron, mg/l | Hardness, mmol/l |
|---|---|---|
| Ķekava and Rāmava, 06.05. | <0.04 | 3.02 |
| Rāmava, Rāmavas iela 2, 14.05. | <0.04 | 3.22 |
| Ziedonis and Valdlauči, 14.05. | <0.04 | 1.76 |
| Valdlauči, Valdlauču iela 8, 14.05. | 0.182 | 1.78 |
| Pļavniekkalna 44A, after the iron removal station, 27.08. | <0.04 | 3.20 |
The limit value for iron is 0.2 mg/l; there is none for hardness. The difference between villages is almost twofold: about 3.0–3.2 mmol/l in the Ķekava and Rāmava samples and about 1.8 mmol/l in Ziedonis and Valdlauči. For a house with water around 3 mmol/l hard, a water softener is worth considering; at 1.8 mmol/l, usually not. One sample in Valdlauči with 0.182 mg/l of iron was close to the limit, but it was taken from a shower tap at a car service, and the other sample in the same village was below 0.04 mg/l.
Your own source or a connection: municipal co-financing
Ķekava municipality binding regulations No. 14/2023 (amended by No. 3/2026) can cover up to 100% of the cost of the connection section up to the connection point on the private plot. The support is up to €2,500 for a single-family or semi-detached house and up to €5,000 if at least two more properties can use the connection. It applies to the water main and sewerage, but only for priority groups: for example, low-income persons, families with three or more children, persons with disabilities, pensioners or households where a child is declared as resident at the property.
Other conditions: the house is registered in the cadastre, the network has already been built in the adjacent street, the owner was declared as resident in the municipality on 1 January of the year, and there are no tax or utility debts. The call for applications is announced in the “Ķekavas Novads” newsletter, and applications are accepted for 60 days. If both networks already run past the plot, sewerage has priority.
If you belong to one of the groups and the network is in the street, a connection may cost less than a new borehole. If you do not, or there is no network, compare the connection estimate with a borehole: a typical borehole ~30 m deep costs from €2,000, fitting out from €500 and submersible pump installation from €200, pump separate.
If the house keeps two sources, binding regulations No. 21/2022 require written confirmation that the borehole or spike well is not connected to the network, and an air gap of at least 50 mm or a special non-return valve at the connection point. A user with their own water abstraction who discharges wastewater into the sewer must document it (point 59).

How we install a source in Ķekava municipality
- Situation In your request, give the village or address, whether there is a network in the street, the depth of neighbours' sources if you know it, and what the water is for: the house, the garden or both.
- Choice On sandy ground with shallow water, we recommend spike well installation in Ķekava (from €350). For a permanent home, or where a spike well does not give enough water, a borehole (from €65/m).
- Location We choose a spot the rig can reach, with the source further from the septic tank and the road. In new streets, we also have to avoid cables and pipes already laid.
- Work and documents For a borehole deeper than 20 m, the drilling company applies for the licence; after the work it prepares the borehole passport for approval by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC). Ask the Ķekava municipal building authority (būvvalde) about an explanatory memorandum (paskaidrojuma raksts) for a new source.
- Water check After test pumping, we recommend borehole water testing and, if the result calls for it, water treatment.
