Baldone's water services used to be run by SIA BŪKS, which has now been merged into SIA Ķekavas nami, but neither company has published which streets the network reaches. Here we describe how to choose a source in terrain like this, what you need to know about the rules and what the jobs cost.
What we know about the water in Baldone
The only test of Baldone's network water we found, ordered by BŪKS (Baldone secondary school, 26.03.2025), covered microbiology, pH and turbidity, but not iron or hardness. We also found no official data on groundwater in the town and the surrounding area. That is why we never say in advance what the water in any Baldone source will be like: a test at the specific house shows that.
For a farmstead kilometres from the town streets, a public mains connection is practically unavailable, and the only question is which source works. In town we first find out whether the street has a network, because that also changes the rules that apply to your borehole or well.
Baldone is known as a former spa resort with sulphur springs, and the surrounding area also has wetter ground. That is history, not information about the water on your plot. If well or borehole water smells of rotten eggs, a test finds the cause, and the solutions are described on the page rotten egg smell in water.
Hilly terrain and country roads: how they change the job
Around Baldone the terrain is wooded and hilly, and road surfaces differ between the centre and the rural areas. A drilling rig needs an access road that is firm enough and a level pad next to the drilling spot. After heavy rain or during the spring thaw a forest road can be impassable for heavy machinery, so in your request we ask you to describe the access road and the distance from the tarmac.
On hilly ground it also matters where the source sits in relation to the septic tank, the cowshed and the compost heap. The national rules set no distance in metres, but good practice is to place the well or borehole higher up and upstream of pollution sources along the groundwater flow. More: protection zone around a well.
A remote rural property also means a longer water pipe from the source to the house, sometimes to a sauna or an outbuilding too. We lay the pipe run below the frost depth and build the entry into the house so that it does not freeze in winter: water supply system installation.
Which source to choose around Baldone
- For an old rural house with a dug well (concrete-ring well) we start with the state of the well: silt, joints, lid. Often well cleaning (from €150) or well deepening (from €150) is enough if the well runs dry in summer.
- For a permanent home that needs a lot of water every day, we usually choose a borehole in Baldone: drilling from €65/m, a borehole about 30 m deep from €2,000 without the pump and pipe run.
- For a summer house or a garden on sandy ground with shallow water, a spike well from €350 is enough.
- A new dug well makes sense where the neighbours' wells work all year. We give the price for well digging after a site visit, because it depends on the number of rings, the soil and access for an excavator.
Nobody can say in advance how much water a borehole or well will have. Drilling or digging and a test pump-out show it. If there is too little water at the chosen spot, we will tell you what the next step is.
The rules: national requirements and Ķekava municipality regulations
In Baldone, as everywhere in Latvia, a source up to 20 m deep extracting no more than 10 m³ per day needs no licence from the State Environmental Service (VVD). For a deeper borehole the drilling company applies for the licence before the work, and the state fee is €35.57. After drilling, the company prepares a borehole passport, which is approved by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC); the state charge for this is €115.34.
A well and a borehole are first-group engineering structures, for which Cabinet Regulation No. 253 (engineering structures) requires an explanatory memorandum (paskaidrojuma raksts) at the municipal building authority (būvvalde) for a new build. The VVD explanatory materials describe the steps differently, so before the work ask the Ķekava municipality building authority what it expects.
Ķekava municipality binding regulations No. 21/2022 also apply to Baldone. If a house has both its own borehole or well and a mains connection, the junction needs an air gap of at least 50 mm or a special non-return valve. When connecting to the network, the owner also confirms in writing that the local source is not joined to it. The municipality also offers co-financing (subsidy) for connections for priority groups of residents; the conditions are described on the Ķekava page.
