Cloudy well water: where the cloudiness comes from and how to fix it

Cloudy water in a dug well (concrete-ring well) can mean five different things: silt and sand from the bottom of the well, surface water running in after rain, dissolved iron, clay particles or damaged rings.

How it works

  1. We pump the well out

    We pump the well out And assess the rings and joints.

  2. We clean walls and bottom

    We clean walls and bottom Silt is lifted out.

  3. We renew the filter

    We renew the filter The gravel layer at the bottom.

  4. We disinfect

    We disinfect And recommend a test afterwards.

Each cause has its own solution, and cleaning helps in only some of the cases. Below is a simple glass test, a table of causes and solutions, and what a laboratory water test shows. If the well needs cleaning, the work with disinfection costs from €150.

The glass test: what you see points to the cause

Pour well water straight from the tap or bucket into a clear glass or bottle and watch it for an hour without shaking.

  • The cloudiness quickly settles at the bottom, with clear water above: it is sand or silt from the well.
  • The water comes out of the well clear, but after an hour turns yellow or brown, and later rust flakes settle at the bottom: this is dissolved iron oxidising on contact with air.
  • The water is whitish and does not settle: most likely fine clay particles.
  • The water is whitish, but clears within a couple of minutes from the bottom up: it is only air, and there is no problem.
  • The water is brown straight from the well and cloudy only after heavy rain or snowmelt: surface water is running into the well.

Causes and what we do in each case

Sign Possible cause Solution
Sand and silt, the pump draws up deposits Silt built up at the bottom, a worn-out bottom filter, the pump intake too low Well cleaning, a new bottom filter, we raise the pump
Cloudy after rain or floods Surface water runs in through the lid, the top joint or down the outside of the rings Sealing the joints, raising the top ring, a clay layer and a slope away from the well
Clear from the well, brown after standing Iron in the aquifer An iron removal filter in the house; cleaning does not solve this
Whitish, does not settle Clay particles, a new well or a well in clay soil For a new well: repeated pumping out; long-term: a bottom filter or filtration
Cloudy at the end of summer, low level Because of the low level the pump draws water from the very bottom Cleaning and, if the well runs dry, deepening
Suddenly a lot of soil and sand A ring has shifted or cracked, soil is collapsing into the well Well repair; do not use the well until then

With iron, the well can be completely clean: the iron is brought into the water by the aquifer itself. On filters and choosing one: iron removal, installation with a filter from €600. Before choosing a filter you need a water test, because the filter is chosen based on the iron, manganese and pH values.

Why cloudy well water after rain is a warning

Groundwater that reaches the well through a layer of sand and gravel is filtered naturally. If the water turns cloudy straight after rain, it means some of the water is getting into the well without this filter: through a leaky lid, the joints or down the outside of the rings. With this water, soil, fertiliser and bacteria get into the well. In that case we recommend a microbiological water test and not drinking the water until the result is known.

Cleaning by itself does not close this route. So during cleaning we check every joint in the empty well and then recommend a specific fix: sealing the joints (well repair) or putting the top ring, lid and surroundings in order (well top and cover).

What a laboratory water test shows

The drinking water regulation sets no numerical limit for turbidity: it must be acceptable to consumers and show no abnormal change. The regulation also recognises that in groundwater turbidity can be caused by iron and manganese. So in the water test we look at these indicators together:

  • iron: compared with 200 µg/l (0.2 mg/l);
  • manganese: compared with 50 µg/l;
  • turbidity and colour: the laboratory gives a value, which we compare with previous tests;
  • coliforms and E. coli: compared with 0 CFU/100 ml, especially if the cloudiness appears after rain;
  • ammonium (0.50 mg/l) and nitrates (50 mg/l), if contamination from manure or sewage is suspected.

We take the sample ourselves, deliver it to an accredited laboratory and explain the result: basic water test from €35, full test from €95. More detail: well water testing.

Cabinet Regulation No. 547 of 26.09.2023 on drinking water, Annex 1: iron 200 µg/l, manganese 50 µg/l, ammonium 0.50 mg/l, nitrates 50 mg/l, coliforms and E. coli 0 CFU/100 ml; turbidity: acceptable to consumers and no abnormal change. For a private well (fewer than 50 people or up to an average of 10 m³ per day) the regulation is not mandatory (4.5), and we use the values for comparison. Source: likumi.lv, checked 03.11.2026.

How much it costs to fix cloudy well water

The price depends on the cause. Well cleaning with a new bottom filter and disinfection costs from €150. Sealing joints and other well repairs start from €150. If the fault is iron, an iron removal filter with installation costs from €600. If you do not know the cause, start with a water test and tell us in the form when the cloudiness appears. All prices: prices.

Frequently asked questions

Can cloudy well water be used for watering and washing clothes?

For watering, usually yes. On laundry, iron and cloudiness leave yellow stains, and sand damages the valves of washing machines and dishwashers. If the cloudiness appears after rain, do not drink the water until you know the result of a microbiological water test.

Is a mechanical filter in the house enough?

A mechanical filter holds back sand and protects the pump and appliances, but does not remove the cause: if there is silt in the well or surface water runs in, the filter will clog quickly. A mechanical filter does not hold back dissolved iron; that needs iron removal.

The water turned cloudy after a new pump was installed. Why?

Most often the pump intake is placed too close to the bottom, or the pump is too powerful for the well and stirs up the deposits. We raise the pump or recommend a more suitable one: well pump.
