Wells or boreholes are not a solution in Vecrīga, so we work with what happens after the building's inlet. A water softener with installation costs from €600, a reverse osmosis filter from €250, filter maintenance from €40/h.
Water in Vecrīga: the city network, not wells
Vecrīga, called Vecpilsēta in the official division into neighbourhoods, is Riga's historic core, with medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and later masonry buildings, hotels, offices and commercial premises. In the 2025 report of Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility), it is not among the neighbourhoods where services are only partly available, and in the same year the company renewed some of the water mains in Vecrīga.
Rīgas ūdens supplies consumers on the right bank with groundwater from the Baltezers and Zaķumuiža abstraction sites in Ādaži and Ropaži municipalities: 285 boreholes 30–40 m deep in Quaternary sediments and 15 boreholes 65–75 m deep in Devonian rocks. Iron and manganese are reduced there before supply, and a biological iron and manganese removal plant was built at Baltezers in stage 4 of the Cohesion Fund project. So a restaurant usually does not need iron removal; hardness is a different matter.
Hardness and limescale: coffee machines, dishwashers, water heaters
Rīgas ūdens publishes the average hardness for the whole network by year (2023: 1.68 mmol/l; 2024: 1.74 mmol/l; 2025: 1.82 mmol/l), and the company's answers give up to 2 mmol/l. One German degree is 0.178 mmol/l, so the network average is about 10 °dH. Cabinet Regulation No. 547 on drinking water sets no limit value for hardness, so the target value is set not by law but by the equipment manufacturers.
The manuals of professional coffee machines and dishwashers usually state the permissible hardness. If the water is harder, limescale builds up in the heating elements and valves, and the repair tends to cost more than a filter. So before choosing, we read the equipment manual and, if needed, measure the hardness at your tap with a water test (basic test from €35).

Capacity matters for a water softener: if it is too small, then in the morning hours, when many hotel guests shower at the same time, water passes through untreated. So in your request it helps to give the number of rooms, how many hours a day the kitchen works, and a description of the existing water heater or heating substation. More: water softening.
There are also units that city water in Vecrīga usually does not need: whole-building iron removal filters and UV disinfection are meant for your own borehole or well. If someone offers them to a hotel on the city network, order a water test first. If it shows no problem, the money is better spent on a water softener and regular maintenance.
Installation in a historic building
If the utility room is in a cellar with low ceilings, narrow stairs and thick walls, we choose units that can be carried in in parts: a compact water softener with a separate salt tank, reverse osmosis under the counter. A water softener needs a drain connection for the regeneration water and a socket, and we check these before the work.
Protection of historic buildings means that we do not drill into walls and vaults without the owner's approval. We run pipes along existing routes, and if a new hole is needed, the building owner or manager approves it in advance.
Access and maintenance in Vecrīga
Vehicle and delivery access in Vecrīga is regulated, the streets are full of pedestrians and parking is scarce. In your request, tell us which street and at what time we can drive up to the entrance, whether an entry permit is needed and at what time the work will not disturb guests. Salt bags for a water softener are heavy, so we agree where to store them and who will deliver them. The water has to be turned off for a while to connect the unit, so in a restaurant we plan the work before the kitchen opens or after it closes.
We plan cartridge changes and water softener checks by consumption: less often for a café with one machine, more often for a hotel with a restaurant. We fit the schedule to the season when there are fewer guests: water filter maintenance.
