The small historic residential area also needs water testing and well maintenance. We clean and equip boreholes, replace pumps, decommission (plug) boreholes that are no longer needed and take water samples for an accredited laboratory.

Kundziņsala: the port, warehouses and a historic residential area

Kundziņsala is a port island with a mainly industrial role: port terminals, cargo handling, warehouses and infrastructure sites. The residential buildings are few and historic. Access is via port roads and a bridge, and security regimes may restrict it.

In the 2025 contract performance report of Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility), Kundziņsala is listed among the small neighbourhoods (up to 1,000 residents) where in certain areas or streets the services are not available or only partly available. The report does not separate the water main from sewerage. Rīgas ūdens describes its water sources only by the banks of the Daugava, and its materials do not say which source supplies the island.

An old borehole on a terminal or warehouse site

If a business takes over or leases an old industrial site, it may have a borehole with an unknown history: no passport, an old pump and an unknown depth. There are two honest ways forward.

  1. Restore We lift out the old pump, measure the depth and the static level, flush the borehole and carry out a test pumping. If the borehole has no passport, the State Environmental Service (VVD) describes a process with a hydrogeological survey licence and preparing a passport; the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) also offers to restore a passport from the State Geological Fund data.
  2. Decommission If the borehole will not be used, Cabinet Regulation No. 696 on subsoil licences obliges the user to mothball or decommission it. A decommissioning report is drawn up and signed by the client and the contractor, and a copy is sent to the State Geological Fund. The contractor applies for the decommissioning licence (€35.57); prior approval by LVĢMC is needed only for wellfield boreholes or boreholes deeper than 300 m.

We price decommissioning after hearing the situation. The price depends on the borehole's depth and diameter, on what has to be lifted out (pump, cable, stuck pipes), on the construction and whether aquifers have to be sealed off from each other, and on the material and access for machinery. More: borehole decommissioning and borehole passport.

Servicing a working borehole for a business

A business's borehole works every day, so its problems show up as production problems: pressure drops, the pump switches on more often, sand appears in the water. The most common causes are a clogged filter, a worn pump or sediment in the borehole.

  • Borehole cleaning and flushing: from €400, usually €400–700 depending on depth and the amount of sediment.
  • Pump replacement: installation from €200, the pump extra, chosen by the required output and depth.
  • After cleaning: a repeat test pumping to see whether the yield has recovered.
  • If the water is used for drinking: a test with microbiology after any work in the borehole.

Checking the causes: borehole not giving water. How the work is done: borehole cleaning.

Working in a guarded port area

In Kundziņsala, security regimes may restrict access, so we plan the work together with the person in charge of the site. Useful in your request: the name or address of the site, a contact person on site, the pass procedure for vehicles and people, and whether the borehole is in a building, a caisson or an open yard. We follow the site's safety instructions just as we follow our own.

For the historic residential area

For a house that takes water from its own well, we recommend a test with microbiology at least once a year and after high water, because the island is in the Daugava and surrounded by port activity. A house on city water needs its own filter only if a tap sample result shows it. The test is done by an accredited laboratory; we take the sample and explain the result: water testing.

Reference values: Cabinet Regulation No. 547 of 26.09.2023 on drinking water, Annex 1; the regulation is not mandatory for a single-household source (sub-point 4.5). Source: likumi.lv/ta/id/345861, checked 03.11.2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does decommissioning an old borehole need a permit?

Decommissioning a borehole counts as use of the subsoil, for which the contractor applies for a VVD licence. State sources do not say clearly whether a licence is also needed for a very shallow borehole, so we check this before the work.

How do I find out whether an old borehole has a passport?

Borehole passports are kept in the State Geological Fund. LVĢMC can issue a certified copy or, if there is no passport, restore it from the fund's data. Give the borehole's location in your request, and we will help prepare the application.

Can you work in a guarded port area?

Yes, if the site arranges the passes and appoints a contact person. We agree the working hours and the zone in advance, before the working day.
