We choose the pump from the test pumping data in the borehole passport, not by which model is cheaper in the shop. Equipping costs from €500, the pump is not included. In your request, give the borehole depth and diameter if you know them.
What borehole equipment consists of
| Part | Where it is | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Submersible pump (3 or 4 inch) | In the borehole below the dynamic water level | Lifts the water and creates pressure |
| Delivery pipe, cable and safety rope | In the borehole above the pump | Carries the water up, supplies power, holds the pump |
| Non-return valve | Above the pump | Stops water running back into the borehole |
| Borehole head | At the top of the pipe | Seals the borehole against surface water and dirt |
| Caisson or borehole adapter | At the borehole, below frost depth | Protects the connection point from frost |
| Pressure tank, pressure switch, pressure gauge | In the house or the caisson | Keeps the pressure, so the pump does not switch on every time a tap is opened |
| Dry-run protection | In the control unit | Switches the pump off if the water level drops to the pump |
| Coarse filter | At the entry into the house | Holds back sand before the pressure tank and treatment equipment |
How we choose a borehole pump
The pump has to lift water from the dynamic level (the level the water falls to during pumping), overcome the distance and height to the house and create pressure at the taps. We take this data from the borehole passport: the static and dynamic levels and the yield. A pump that pumps more than flows into the borehole lowers the level down to itself and starts sucking air or sand.
The pump is lowered deep enough to be always under water, but not too close to the filter, where it could stir up sand. A 4 inch pump needs a borehole with a sufficient inner diameter; a narrower borehole takes a 3 inch pump. If the house needs steady pressure at several points at once, a pump with a variable frequency drive is chosen, which changes its speed to match consumption.
If there is no passport, before equipping we measure the water level and carry out a short test pumping. More on pumps and pressure tanks: water pump installation.
Caisson or borehole adapter
The borehole head and connection must be where they do not freeze. A caisson is an underground chamber around the borehole head where valves and sometimes the pressure tank can be placed, and it is easy to reach for maintenance. An adapter is a fitting in the pipe wall below frost depth: the water main leaves the borehole underground, and only the borehole cap remains above ground.
An adapter is cheaper and cannot flood, but all the controls are then in the house. Which option suits depends on the groundwater level, the distance to the house and whether the house has room for the equipment. More detail: borehole caisson.
Building code LBN 222-15 “Water Supply Structures” (Cabinet Regulation No. 326 of 30.06.2015), point 65: the borehole design prevents pollution through the borehole head, and the head may be placed in a shaft only if flooding is fully ruled out. Point 72: the pump is installed and lifted out through a hatch above the borehole head. Source: likumi.lv, checked 03.11.2026.
How the equipping is done
- Data and plan We look at the passport or measure the borehole and agree where the caisson or adapter, the entry into the house and the utility room will be.
- Borehole head and connection We dig out the top of the pipe, cut it to the required height, and install the adapter or caisson and the borehole head.
- Lowering the pump We lower the pump with the delivery pipe, cable and safety rope to the calculated depth. We insulate the cable joint at the pump watertight.
- Entry into the house We bring the water main and cable into the house below frost depth and seal the entry point in the wall or foundations.
- Controls and testing We connect the pressure tank, pressure switch and protection, set the switch-on and switch-off pressure, pressure-test the joints and run the water until it is clear.
If the water test shows iron or hardness, we plan space for treatment equipment now, so the pipework does not have to be rebuilt later: water treatment.
How much borehole equipment costs
Borehole equipment costs from €500 without the pump. We choose the pump together with you based on the borehole data and consumption, and name its price separately before the work. The total is affected by:
- the distance from the borehole to the house and the entry point;
- caisson or adapter and, if a caisson, what type;
- the pressure tank volume and whether frequency control is needed;
- the borehole depth, which determines the length of the delivery pipe and cable;
- whether old equipment has to be removed first.
If the borehole is already equipped and only the pump needs replacing, submersible pump installation costs from €200 without the pump: borehole pump replacement. We look at the water main from the borehole to the house and the system in the house together: water supply system installation for a private house. All prices: prices.
